Second children. They get the shaft sometimes, although not intentionally. The problem is, he has a louder, bigger and admittedly whinier sibling that often demands more attention that my sweet little guy does. Never fear though, he’s scrappy. We are working on his sucker punch. Just in case.
So because of that, I feel a little bad about postponing his birthday. Sorta how I feel bad about the time I went in to my kids room at midnight expecting to retrieve a binky (and then promptly go back to sleep). Except that, instead, I found my child naked, shivering and lying covered in urine. Looking strangely like Neo in those human pods on the matrix, curled up helplessly in the fetal position.
Why is he naked you ask? I HAVE NO IDEA. It’s not as if his room is warm, it’s actually freezing cold. Which makes me realize, A. I didn’t check on my kid before bed, oops. B. Since the diaper on the floor is completely dry, I’m gonna assume he’s been laying there for quite a while. So you salvage whatever scrap of parental dignity remains, by hastily patting him dry, replacing his footed zipper pajamas and laying him on the floor so you can change out his entire linen. No big deal, its only 1am. I have to be up in four hours. Never mind that I haven’t even fallen asleep yet. Little buddy, I’m real sorry. Contrary to this incident, we really love you, like a lot.
So, Owen, do not take my writing this two days late as a sign. You may or may not read this ever, but that hardly matters. What matters is, you have brought a light to our family, a smiling and bright spot that has made us a unit, adding a sense of completion that I did not expect. For all your energy, crib climbing, and resistance to napping — we wouldn’t change a single thing about you.
Happy Birthday.

What a wonderful post. Owen is blessed to have you as a mom, Katherine. Don’t ever forget that.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY O and A
I love his smile…what happened to naps and bedtime? He was here a mere 3 weeks ago and napped 3 hours and was in bed by 7:30 pm? Must be missing me
Yes, he misses you. And he is in a toddler bed now, AKA I can get up 57 times. Fun.
Great picture! Really, just adorable.
