a late anniversary trip

in Katherine, andy, holidays, vacation

We got away for the weekend and it was heavenly.  My in laws are both leaving town for a little over a week and we are on babysitting duty.  Khoa and Christine (exchange students) are in high school though so at least I don’t have to wipe more butts.  Besides it will give us a glimpse into the lives of teenagers, eg., picking up kids after volleyball practice, taking them to college night, dealing with boyfriends (AHHH).  I am already dreading how old it is going to make me feel.

That has nothing to do with us getting away for the weekend, except for the fact that my in-laws felt bad about us being on babysitting duty so they sent us away for the weekend.  After much deliberation we picked the *hot* spot Sandpoint.  I am joking about that, but it was really fun.   We walked around Sandpoint (which took about 5 minutes), and looked at some incredibly bad art before heading up the mountain to Schweitzer.  The rooms up there were only $130 a night and Fall Fest (microbrew festival) was going on.  I was pleasantly surprised.  There were a ton of people up there with kids too, it could definitely be a fun day trip, but I enjoyed it SO much more without them.  Although the festival was small, the beers were really good.  For $20 each we bought a 22oz mug with three refills.  It was a beautiful day with great beer and the ability to drink as much as we wanted and stagger back to our room.  As a side, I was hit on by this Really drunk guy, and yes Andy was with me.  He walks up to me, glazed over eyes, with a glass of water that is a quarter full.  He says, “you look like you could use a drink of water.”  I say, “it looks like you drank it all already (dumb ass).”  So he says, “well, would you like some water?”  No thank you I say, I’m pretty sure you need it more.  Seriously.  Seriously.  I always get hit on by weird, creepy people that are intoxicated.  Probably because the sober guys would have noticed the HUSBAND standing right next to me and would have the decency NOT to hit on someones wife.

On to the best part.  The best part of our get away was our *camping* experience. We drove about an hour from Sandpoint to the lovely town of Troy, Montana.  I only saw one fire range on the way, less than expected.  We got lost for only about 2 hours, which considering the poor signage and directions, seems like a bonus.  At first being lost was fun, like a little adventure, then it was just plain annoying.  Eventually we made it after driving an additional 30 miles.  One thing I love about Andy is his ability to find cool things, but he does this best under pressure.  For weeks we have been talking about getting away for the weekend but we are both a little lazy and indecisive, so finally this past week I bugged him enough and he pulled through.  We didn’t really camp in the normal fashion, but instead we stayed 30 feet off the ground in a retired fire lookout tower.  Owned by the forest service, they now rent them out to the public for $35 a night.  It was complete with a gas stove and light and bed.  Oh and four walls to keep out the cold!  They are booked like 1-2 years in advance, but their happened to be one night during the weekend that was available.  It was dizzying to walk up the stairs at first, and it took a couple minutes to adjust to the height without being freaked out. It is up about 5000 feet elevation and the view was beautiful.  We cooked, I read books, talking by candlelight –it was a perfect way to kickoff the next few months of busyness.  Check out our photos and see for yourself.  With binoculars you could barely make out two other towers.  We kept wishing we were on the Lord of the Rings, signaling to the other towers through the lighting of a fire.

Addy starts preschool tomorrow.  I am so excited for her!
