Potty Training

in potty training

Nobody tells you just how hard this process is (probably because then we’d never do it). So I decided, ever so brilliantly, to potty train addy while I was on maternity leave. I get these really bright ideas. They just come to me — probably during my many sleepless nights or during the checkout at costco when we paid for two boxes of diapers and wipes. So, in keeping with andy and I’s fairly laid back disposition I sorta started potty training. Half the day she would wear a diaper, a quarter of the day a pullup and the rest of the day she was just naked –not so effective.

Here are my tips (learned in retrospect, of course):

1. Practice using the potty for months -we actually did do this

2. Forget pullups and just go buck

3. Buy Resolve

4. Don’t be half-assed

5. Always pee before meals!

6. Buy “mini treats” –we learned that quick when she continually asked for big treats

7. Set a timer

8. Be prepared to clean up a lot of pee and poo off the floor (sooo fun)  **see #3***

In the end though, I did up my game.  This week she definitely had a poop breakthrough. Now we have lots of funny conversations in public bathrooms that go like this, “I’m gonna push it out mom.” Accompanied by lots of grunting noises of course.  Sorry everyone.
